Try your hand at writing poems and/or stories in the company of like minded people. This relaxed and supportive group will help you to find your voice as a writer and to develop your own unique style.

Course aim

Working at your own level you will explore a range of writing which will include poems and stories. You will have the opportunity to write and perform a piece as part of the Headingley Lit Fest.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • All are welcome on this fun and friendly course.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Prepare a piece of writing for a performance at Headingley Lit Fest.
  • Examine the requirements of a specific market and write a poem or a story for that market.
  • Extend and develop your feedback/critiquing skills
  • Write one or more pieces of free verse using published pieces as the starting point and inspiration.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Learners are encouraged to read their homework out in class (not compulsory). If a copy of this work is supplied to the tutor some brief feedback notes will be returned.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
