Gardening for Pleasure

An informal classroom based course that will provide you with a sound basic knowledge of a wide range of gardening techniques and plants. The course will cover things such as; increasing plant knowledge to aid you to choose plants for different conditions, plant propagation including how to plant from seed, cuttings and division, garden care and maintenance including pruning and recognising common pests and diseases. The session will include a couple of demonstrations and practical activities such as how to take a cutting.

Course aim

To provide an overview of a wide range of basic gardening tasks to enable people to increase their knowledge of garden plants and be able to care for their own gardens including plant propagation.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify and describe a range of plants according to their type
  • Identify plants suitable for growing in different conditions e.g. wet ground, dry conditions, sun or shade
  • List different methods of propagating plants and describe how to undertake these

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring paper and pen(s) There will be time each lesson for you to bring in a plant that you have a question about but this is optional. You may wish to bring a gardening book/magazines to some of the sessions but this is optional
