A journey through 150 years of Italian social, cultural and political history. Using images, film clips, extracts from novels and contemporary accounts the course will go beneath the surface of Bella Italia to understand the complexities, and the joys and sorrows of Italian life. Sessions include, A New Country; the Experience of Emigration, home and abroad; the Problem of the South; the Rural Experience; Futurism; Novels of Peasant Crisis; Memories of War; 20th Century Italian Film; Delizia! Food in Italy; Made in Italy, fashion,style and design, the Family; Dirty Money and Clean Hands

Course aim

Using original images, source material and extracts from popular culture to explore the social, artistic and political history of Italy, 1859-2015.

Who is the course for?

- No skills or experience needed - Anyone who is interested in Italian history, culture, style and food!

What topics will this course cover

- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning - Hand-outs, readings, images, film and video clips

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

How will I know I'm making progress?

- A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

- Just bring interest and a readiness to enjoy the sessions
