The course is aimed at all abilities. You will learn all the basics of pottery hand-building techniques. You will explore decorative techniques using coloured slips and glazes. Come and join like minded people in bashing a lump of clay into something more interesting, that will last forever! There will be a small materials charge on top of the course fee.

Course aim

This 10 week course will teach you the basics of hand built pottery techniques. At first you will follow one or two structured projects then you will be set free with your imagination and clay.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • You will explore and experience two different making methods of pottery. (coiling, pinch pots, press moulding, slab building).
  • You will explore and experience two different decorating techniques. (slip decoration, sgraffito, glazing, burnishing, oxides).
  • You will build upon any existing skills in order to evaluate your own work for further development creatively and technically.
  • Use the correct terms and vocabulary to describe how you made your work.
  • Adhere to health and safety requirements at all times. Ensure you practice safe working methods with the materials you are using.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Your work will be assessed continually as you progress.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
