Creative Writing - Scribbles and Jottings

Write poetry and stories in this relaxed and supportive class. Working at your own pace, you will explore a wide range of forms and themes. Beginners and improvers alike are welcome so, come along, bring a pen and paper, tablet or laptop and discover your hidden potential.

Course aim

This course will help you to develop as a writer within a group of like-minded learners. Be prepared to be inspired, to write and (if you feel comfortable) to share your work with others.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Feel confident in exploring new methods for inspiring creativity.
  • Understand and apply the 'rules' for writing poetry in a fixed form.
  • Explore the art of the very short. How few words can you use to tell a story/write a poem?
  • Give constructive feedback and improve editing skills
  • Use letters and other documents as a device to construct a story or poem.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Bring a pen and paper. Laptops/tablets can also be used.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Learners on this course have progressed to publish their work, perform their work and also to Higher Education.
