This will be a follow up to the original course but participation is open to all, no need to have attended the original course. Topics that the course will cover - 1. reading narrative in paintings 2. check list of what makes a satisfying painting 3. The Great Tradition of 2-D illusionism 4. art materials that shape a picture 5. tricks of the trade 6. artists' biographies 7. cultural trends 8. the academic hierarchy of subjects 9. taste 10. "I don't know much about art but I know what I like".

Course aim

An exciting new interactive course to encourage engagement with the historical background that underpins our visual culture. It is aimed to create a sense of confidence which will encourage deeper participation in the appreciation of art.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • begin to understand the relationship between art, imagery and society
  • feel more confident in relation to the formal aspects of art production
  • be able to take some of the content away with me in order to appreciate art more and / or influence my own creativity

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • illustrated lectures with discussion throughout including material brought in by students

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
