Learn and practice a variety of techniques to deal with life's challenges including relaxation techniques, mindfulness, activities to improve mood, memory and concentration, challenge negative thinking and increase confidence. Get to know other people and share ideas.

Course aim

To learn practical techniques for dealing with anxiety and low mood and build confidence.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Memorize a given list of 7 items to the best of my ability and follow specific instructions to juggle and recall the list.
  • Describe or demonstrate the "rag doll" relaxation technique.
  • Record my response to a given selection of mindful poetry.
  • List 2 things that nourish you and 2 things that deplete you.
  • From the techniques learnt this term give examples of 2 you have found useful.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to discuss ideas with your fellow students. The emphasis will be on learning practical techniques and you will gain more from the course if you practice ideas at home during the week .

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will receive verbal and written feedback from your tutor.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you could bring something to write with.
