Michelangelo: Painter and Sculptor

Ref: C3671078

This course will consider the painting and sculpture of Michelangelo across his long lifetime, placing these works into their broader art-historical, social, political and historical contexts. We will look at a range of works in detail, considering their formal qualities, as well as issues of patronage, original location, medium, technique and purpose, so as to build a detailed understanding of the development of Michelangelo's European-wide reputation as a new kind of craftsman: the artist as 'divine'.
