Fiction: Family Legacies. The course explores how the social and cultural backgrounds of the time create tensions in families in the nineteenth century. Read, analyse and discuss three novels: one set in Russia, one in the USA, one set in Manchester, UK. Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev (published: 1862) Washington Square by Henry James (published:1880) Bodies of Light by Sarah Moss (published: 2014)

Course aim

To read, analyse and discuss three works of fiction, exploring the generational tensions in families in the nineteenth century.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • All students interested in discussing literature are welcome.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the historical/social/cultural backgrounds of the 3 novels.
  • Identify a variety of narrative techniques used by writers of fiction.
  • Compare the use of setting and characterisation in fiction.
  • Examine and evaluate plot development in fiction.
  • Compare and contrast styles of writing of prose fiction.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students are encouraged to undertake independent background research, which will enhance their own learning and that of other members of the class.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Students should purchase or borrow copies of the three novels, which will be read in this order: Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev Washington Square by Henry James Bodies of Light by Sarah Moss

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Pre reading is helpful, but each novel will be divided into three sections, then each section discussed separately, following a schedule provided by the tutor
