Creative Writing Course for Women. A friendly and supportive group designed to develop writing skills in both prose and poetry. The course will include writing in the group, suggested 'homework' and editing techniques.

Course aim

A creative writing course for women, covering poetry and prose, which aims to increase students' self -confidence and to help them develop both as writers and readers

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre
  • No prior knowledge required, but an interest in both writing and reading is essential.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify significant progress in their ability as writers
  • Usefully discuss elements of their own work and that of others
  • Have an understanding of creative writing and editing techniques

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • All students will be encouraged to read widely, and to complete weekly homework assignments. In class, students will discuss a given text and then write new work suggested by and loosely based on the model.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • Immediate feedback in the group on written work, and suggested editing of work completed outside the group. Private discussion with the tutor after the session and/or by email when appropriate.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Writing materials ie notebook, pen required.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • An interest in reading is essential.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
  • Many students take other courses, including IT, English GCSE and A level and other creative disciplines. Students are encouraged to develop their reading and writing skills outside class and to attend additional workshops and readings.
