Advanced Latin for Pleasure

Ref: C3671045

Come and translate Latin in a friendly, supportive and stimulating group. We shall tackle two core texts (one verse and one prose) alongside shorter extracts of other relevant texts. All students will have plenty of opportunities to translate, discuss and benefit from the wide range of insights provided by all the members of the class. Wherever possible we will consider the impact of Latin literature on modern European society and culture and its links to modern debates. Discussions are also intended to enable students to gain more from their own visits to museums and classical sites. Students will be invited to prepare some translation at home as well as translating unseen in class but the atmosphere is always relaxed and students can set their own pace for independent work. This course is for anyone who is reasonably confident with Latin and who wishes to gain first-hand experience of some of Europe's finest literature and its continued fascination for people today.

Course aim

To promote enjoyment of reading classical Latin literature and to enable students to become independent readers of Latin

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is intended for confident readers of Latin. You will read whole texts of original Latin at a reasonable pace and although plenty of support will be given by the tutor, this course is not suitable for beginners or improvers.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Translate and describe the genre, artistry and impact of one key verse text (Ovid Ars Amatoria 1)
  • Translate and describe the genre, artistry and impact of one key prose text (Tacitus Annals IV)
  • Show greater confidence in translating Latin independently

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • All texts will be provided but you will find that having your own dictionary and grammar will be very useful

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
