Inspiring Watercolour Techniques

A well paced course following a step by step approach along with demonstrations on colour mixing, brush control, painting successful washes and dry brush technique. A variety of carefully chosen subjects will allow students to experiment with a variety of methods and techniques whilst being encouraged to use their own ideas and props. How to approach that blank piece of paper, from initial proportions and dimensions to finishing touches with the brush. Work in a friendly, warm atmosphere with like minded people.

Course aim

To experiment with more varied techniques and methods used in modern watercolour painting, to improve on drawing skills, colour mixing and brush control.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Plan a drawing using added props to create extra interest.
  • Create paintings with impact with good use of tonal contrast.
  • Use mixed media as a way of enhancing your focal point.
  • Mix a wide range of colours both warm and cool.
  • Use aerial perspective in a painting to give impressive depth.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be encouraged to use your own ideas and source material if you wish.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • 2B pencil, eraser and rule. Watercolour paints, palette, brushes, watercolour paper and water container.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
