Italian for Beginners

Enjoy learning a beautiful language with a native Italian tutor in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Mainly focused on developing conversational skills, with this course you will be able to handle the basic everyday and social language to communicate with Italian people.

Course aim

To be introduced to Italian language and culture. To learn the basic language in order to communicate simply with Italian people in everyday, social and travelling contexts.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for people who would like to learn Italian in order to communicate simply while visiting Italy or with Italian friends. No previous knowledge of the language or experience needed for this course.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Greet people using the appropriate form of greeting according to the context, formal or informal, and the time of the day.
  • Introduce myself in formal and informal situations. Talk about myself and ask for other people's details.
  • Read and demonstrate understanding of simple menus; order a drink and something to eat; check and understand prices.
  • Identify main buildings in a town; ask for and follow simple directions to places of interest; ask for information and help to understand.
  • Extract key information from listening materials appropriate to a beginners level.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be asked to prepare some written homework between sessions in order to practise the language.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
