Church Chapel and Cathedral: Through Artists' Eyes Day School

This session aims to focus on the theme of 'Church, Chapel & Cathedral' & explore the ways in which these influenced artists between the 17th & 20th Centuries. Aspects of the backgrounds of the artists & the production of the paintings will be discussed - artists included took the theme in several ways: as part of the landscape/townscape, architecturally, effects of light/shade, socio-historical aspects of the people involved. Fully illustrated with discussion.

Course aim

This session will explore the ways in which the themes of 'Church, Chapel & Cathedral' have influenced artists between the 17th & 20th Centuries.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1) Contribute to constructive discussion of the themes studied
  • 2) Discuss & analyse a range of examples of paintings depicting the themes
  • 3) Understand the background context within which the paintings were produced
  • 4) Realise the significance of the works within their wider art historical chronology
  • 5) Compare & contrast the different examples & approaches by artists from different periods

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • A notebook & pen may be useful for making notes
