Drawing and Painting

Ref: C3670975

Join a friendly and supportive group where the intention is to help each student produce increasingly confident and personal work. Students attend with varying levels of experience: each student works at their own level and beginners receive plenty of encouragement. Roughly two thirds of each lesson is spent drawing or painting. There are also demonstrations and discussions. You can expect some one-to-one tuition in most sessions. The course includes: using a range of watercolour techniques to paint landscape; drawing and painting flowers and plants in various materials; making a contemporary composition based on eighteenth century Dutch flower paintings; discussions arising from subjects covered during the term. Sometimes a step-by-step approach is used but students are also encouraged to think for themselves rather than simply following instructions to achieve a finished product. It should be possible to produce one or two finished pictures.

Course aim

For students at all levels to discover and develop their existing art skills, acquire new ones and benefit socially from sharing their experience with others.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Beginners should be aware that this course follows on from the previous term and they may feel uncomfortably insecure. Simpler tasks can be requested.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Apply watercolour washes with more confidence
  • Judge different stages of dampness and different consistencies of watercolour to help predict probable outcomes
  • Describe the advantages of using thumbnail sketches and colour inventories in preparation for painting a picture
  • Combine a variety of media including photocopies to make a pleasing or exciting composition
  • Think creatively and use some of the things that didn't go so well as opportunities to take my work in new and unexpected directions

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Approximately 50% to 75% of each lesson is spent on practical work.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
