Exploring Art Galleries

This course will, following an introductory session, include 9 gallery visits to explore aspects of the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. Integrated with tutor led explanation, interactive group discussion and analysis of the paintings and themes will provide the basis for understanding the works. A concluding session will summarise the material and themes covered by the different gallery visits. Transport not included, full details of locations to be visited & travel information will be provided at the introductory session.

Additional information about this course

First and last session of the course will be held at The Little Theatre. Transport is not included to the venues for the 9 gallery visits.

Course aim

To explore aspects of permanent collections and temporary exhibitions in local and regional Art Galleries.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Contribute to constructive discussion and analysis of paintings in the gallery exhibitions.
  • Understand the background to the artists and paintings included.
  • Consider the gallery environments and how different ones vary in their approach to display of works.
  • Realise the significance of the themes of the exhibitions visited.
  • Consider a wide range of styles and mediums in the works included in the different galleries/exhibitions.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • A notebook & pen may be useful for making notes

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • A list of relevant background reading will be provided during the course
