T'ai Chi Qigong is a gentle exercise suitable for men and women of all ages. The exercises and forms work to improve posture, balance and flexibility in body and joints. It can help to increase concentration and reduce stress. All movements can be adapted for different physical capabilities.

Course aim

To improve and maintain good health in body mind and spirit by promoting the smooth flow of Chi or energy through the body using Qigong exercises and Forms

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Develop correct Qigong posture and natural breathing and understand how Chi flows through the body and the benefits this can give you.
  • Perform a variety of static exercises to reduce stress, maintain movement in joints and balance the blood pressure.
  • Demonstrate a variety of walking exercises, to develop balance and co-ordination and prevent falls.
  • Perform the Qigong Form Monkey Walks the Circle.
  • Explain the Form and the benefits of the movements.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students will be encourages to practise the movements at home as the benefits of T'ai Chi Qigong are accumulative and repartition of the movements will give greater benefits.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Assessment charts of all movements will keep track of each students progress.

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of hand-out sheets will be provided by the tutor.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
