T'ai Chi Qigong for All Abilities

T'ai Chi Qigong is a gentle form of exercise with low impact movements protecting muscle and joint stress. It improves posture, balance, concentration and flexibility whilst reducing the risk of injury.

Course aim

To improve and maintain health in body, mind and spirit, with Qigong exercises and Forms to promote smooth flow of Chi or energy throughout the body. To practise movements which help keep the body supple improving concentration and reducing stress.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Suitable for men and women of all physical abilities.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Develop correct Qigong posture and natural breathing and understand how Chi flows through the body and the benefits this can give you
  • Perform a variety of static exercises to reduce stress, maintain movement in joints, build bone density and enhance muscle tone.
  • Demonstrate a variety of walking exercises, these will be taken from parts of the form to give extra practise.
  • Perform Yang Style T'ai Chi Chuan Peking 24 step form.
  • Explain the form and the history of the Yang family.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students will be encouraged to practise the movements at home as the benefits are accumulative and more repartition will give greater benefit.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of hand out sheets will be provided by the tutor.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
