Moving Forward with Watercolours

A steadily paced series of staged works on a variety of subjects. Advice on how to plan and draw a balanced composition as well as information and demos on how to achieve accurate 2 point perspective. Students will be guided through each stage of both the drawing and the painting process with useful tips and advice along the way. How to mix the colour you want and achieve the effects you require with varied brush techniques. A good variety of subjects carefully chosen to allow you to use a number of methods and techniques commonly used in modern watercolour painting.

Course aim

To give students improved confidence to create their own drawings and compositions. To mix colours more accurately and to improve on brush control and technique.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Paint a variety of dramatic skyscapes.
  • Demonstrate improvements in ability to mix colours accurately.
  • Take advantage of unpainted areas to create highlights or lost edges.
  • Create texture for the effect of fur or feathers.
  • Describe how to use resists such as masking fluid, candle wax and low tack masking tape.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • A step by step approach will often be used to guide students through each stage of the painting.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • 2B pencil, eraser and rule. Watercolour paints, palette, brushes, watercolour paper and water container.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
