An exciting and informative look at how to create impacting and vibrant watercolours. How to improve drawing and painting skills, colour mixing and have better brush control on a variety of carefully chosen subjects. Step by step procedure where appropriate as well as at the easel demonstrations. Studying and experimenting with various styles of painting used by well known watercolourists. How to create mood, atmosphere and impact with the use of stacatto or soft, hazy techniques to show bright sunlight or rainy, misty effects. A good selection of varied subject matter will be provided. Enjoy the experience in a warm, friendly light-hearted environment with like-minded people.

Course aim

To encourage students to interact, share ideas, become better observationalists and use simplification to compose better drawings and paintings.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe in simple terms, how working from a vanishing point can help with perspective.
  • Create wet in wet passages effectively.
  • Use aerial perspective to achieve distance in a landscape.
  • Produce an accurate drawing from a complex photograph.
  • Demonstrate the basic principles of the mixing of warm and cool colours.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • 2B pencil, eraser, rule, watercolour paints, palette, brushes, watercolour paper and water container.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
