Impacting Watercolour Themes

A variety of subjects provided in the form of photographs and photocopies to be completed in a mostly step by step approach with more experienced students using their own ideas more freely. Topics will cover mostly aspects of both drawing and painting techniques on a wide variety of subjects helping to increase both confidence and knowledge, carried out through a carefully staged procedure allowing students to absorb information at a comfortable pace. A rewarding, informative experience with lots of advice and useful information to improve your painting and drawing technique.

Course aim

To explore the potential of watercolour giving added confidence whilst allowing students to experiment more freely with a variety of methods and techniques.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Assess and accurately breakdown tonal values within your subject.
  • Mix a range of natural green shades to be used within a landscape.
  • Use varied brush techniques to control a wide number of flowing shapes ranging from thick to thin lines.
  • Create sharp staccato or soft and hazy effects within a painting.
  • Choose an appropriate palette to support the mood of a painting.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • 2B pencil, eraser, rule. Watercolour paints, palette, brushes, watercolour paper and water container.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
