Beginners Yoga

Yoga is an ancient practice that aims to bring a sense of unity to the experience of the mind and body so that we can become more aware of who we are. There are many different styles of yoga, the yoga taught on this course falls under the broad banner of Hatha Yoga, which is a gentle and meditative form of yoga that is suitable for all. The course will cover basic principles of yoga through practice of posture work, breath work and relaxation. Yoga can help with physical strength and stamina, flexibility and mobility, as well as helping to reduce stress and discomfort and aiding feelings of relaxation.

Course aim

To provide a basic introduction to the practice of yoga which is enjoyable, safe and beneficial to students of all levels and abilities.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Feel the benefits of a regular, on-going yoga practice to overall feelings of well-being.
  • Explore what being 'grounded' feels like.
  • Use the foundation of a posture to build stability.
  • Feel stronger and more supported by the legs and feet.
  • Find ways in which to feel more relaxed.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Any practice that the student feels able to continue with outside of the classroom will help to build on the techniques that they have learnt and aid with progression.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • Feedback and questions are very welcome and there will be time during the sessions for both one to one discussion with the tutor and group discussion.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Warm and comfortable clothing will be most suitable for the class.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
