Discover month - Ancient Egypt : A Virtual Tour of the Nile

In this course we explore some of the major sites of ancient Egypt. We will trace the development of pyramids from the step pyramid at Saqqara to the more famous pyramids of Giza, explore the magnificent art in private tombs of Saqqara and Thebes, tour the temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahri, and conclude with the Valley of the Kings including the treasures of Tutankhamun.

Course aim

Discover the splendors of ancient Egypt from a classroom in Bristol. This course will provide an illustrated introduction to some of the main sites of ancient Egypt include the pyramids of Giza and the Valley of the Kings.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss the construction of the pyramids at Giza
  • Describe a scene from an ancient Egyptian private tomb
  • Identify three artefacts from the tomb of Tutankhamun

How will I be taught?

  • The course will comprise of well-illustrated presentations with lots of opportunity for questions or discussion

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Informal feedback throughout the day, no tests or exams

What else do I need to know?

  • A pen and paper will be helpful

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Not essential at all but if time allows reading an introduction to ancient Egypt will help you get more from the day, many would be appropriate including the volume by Salima Ikram Ancient Egypt : An Introduction.
