Exploring Psychology

This course aims to provide an insight into the history of Psychology both as a science and as a way of thinking about human nature. It will briefly outline * the early attempts to study the mind scientifically * psychology as the science of behaviour * Freud's contribution * computer models of the mind * where Psychology is today It will also provide an introduction to the follow up course which will examine some concepts of Psychology, including intelligence, personality, sanity, mind, gender, and identity over six weekly sessions.

Course aim

To provide an overview of the nature of Psychology, as a science and as a way of thinking about human nature.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for all levels of ability and no prior educational experience is required. Everyone is welcome

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise that there are different interpretations regarding the nature of Psychology.
  • Appreciate that these different interpretations are related to wider historical, social and political changes.
  • Demonstrate some knowledge of the wide range of different methods used to find out about human nature.
  • Be able to provide two or more different definitions of Psychology.
  • Enjoy taking part in some simple Psychology experiments and demonstrations.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

  • A copy of the presentation slides will be provided with links to further sources.
