A practical course of stitching/Rag rugging which will be supported with discussions on the historical and social context of each skill. The techniques you will experience: Rag Rugging: two techniques and you will make a sari silk corsage. A domestic/home textile craft. Goldwork embroidery: used on royal robes, ecclesiastical robes Stumpwork Embroidery: basket of oranges. Linking with horticultural activities with orangeries and the plant hunters. Surface embroidery: Wedgewoods and Jasper Ware. Embroidering on blue silk with a number of white threads. Silk ribbon Embroidery: create a number of flowers that the Plant Hunters brought into this country 17th-18th Century. All samples for the time allowed will be small and beginners are welcome.

Course aim

This course is practical textile course where you will be stitching/rag rugging but there will be also discussed the historical context of each skill you will be experiencing. Beginners welcome.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Name 3 historic textile skills and to have produced a sample of each created during the session.
  • Rag Rugging: Be able to do proddy technique having produced a Sari Silk corsage
  • Name 2 Plant Hunters and a plant they introduced into the UK.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • bring glasses if they need them for close work. bring small scissors and larger sharp scissors to cut fabric. All materials will be suppled. Course cost for resources: £10 per student bring embroidery hoops if they have them: 4-6" size
