Modern Calligraphy for Beginners and Improvers

A wonderful opportunity to learn the graceful style of Modern Calligraphy, including lower case and capital letters, with a view to developing your own style and applying these techniques to produce a finished piece of calligraphy.

Course aim

To offer a brief introduction to the characteristics of Modern Calligraphy including tools and materials, with a view to developing your own hand lettering.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • A keen interest to learn the style is all that is required.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Select appropriate materials for writing Modern Calligraphy
  • Construct upper & lower case letterforms in Modern Calligraphy
  • Write upper & lower case using suitable ligatures
  • Apply my own characteristics into a Modern Calligraphy style
  • Identify the principles and produce balanced layouts

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • I will monitor and assess students letter forms through a combination of exercises and projects with worksheets to engage with.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Comfortable clothing and a good pair of glasses (if needed). We will be sat down for the most part of the course. Reference books and work sheets will be provided. Tools and materials will be available to buy if needed.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
