'Conversation Confidence' will give a friendly, supportive class for practising your English and helping you feel confident in your ability. This course will cover: - How to get over your fear of practising your English. - Looking at where you want to speak English and building up the confidence to speak to people in those places. - Practising English for places where you feel naturally nervous, for example job interviews. - Different topics of conversation. - How to talk about your opinions - agreeing and disagreeing. - Making 'small talk' as well as more serious conversations. - Games and activities that help you communicate and have fun with English.

Course aim

This course will help you to build up your confidence in speaking English as a Second Language. You will be given support by a friendly teacher and a volunteer.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is for anybody who wants to gain confidence and practice in everyday communication .

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Speak to people I don't know with greater confidence.
  • Use my English with greater confidence in stressful situations such as job interviews.
  • Understand people better in conversations.
  • Speak with greater confidence about my opinions.
  • Feel confident enough to try my English in new situations such as volunteering.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be asked to try out conversational activities in your free time to help you build your confidence.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
