Moving Ahead with Mindfulness

Offering an opportunity for any one who has attended a mindfulness course and started to establish a regular practice to explore mindfulness practices in more depth. To gain a deeper understanding of how regular mindfulness practice can support us in times of stress, difficulty or ill health.

Course aim

Offering the opportunity to further explore mindfulness practice and develop deeper understanding of how this can help in coping with stress, ill health and difficulty.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This is a course for people who have attended a mindfulness course over 4 sessions or 2 full days long and who have begun to stablish their own mindfulness practice.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Establish a regular practice of mindfulness, including mindfulness of the body, of the breath, of movement and of thoughts
  • Establish a regular practice of mindfulness of everyday activities and integrate this into everyday life
  • Demonstrate an understanding of different aspects of reactions to difficulty - sensations, thoughts and feelings
  • Identify some early warning signs of stress and develop an action plan for coping with difficult situations

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • You will be encouraged to engage in mindfulness practice of around 40 minutes a day during the course and to keep a brief record

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • you will have the opportunity to reflect on learning at every class and there will be sheets supplied to briefly record experiences of home practice, which the tutor will respond to each week in writing

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • it is important that students have attended a short course on mindfulness and have begun to establish a regular practice

What can I do next?

  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
