Sisterhoods:Art of the suffragettes and women war artists, talk & afternoon tea

Ref: C3529319

This talk is being given by Joanna Cobb MA and is followed by an afternoon tea with sandwiches, cake scones and tea provided by the hotel. This talk not only co-incides with the centenary of the Representation of the People Act and the armistice in 1918, but also with the current campaign for greater recognition and freedoms for women a century later. Whilst some of the art of the suffragettes may be more familiar, in particular through posters, the contribution of women war artists is less well known. Yet the works of artists such as Olive Mudie-Cooke, Anna Airy and Flora Lion make an important contribution to an understanding of the war effort both on the home front and behind the lines of battle. As such, these women creative complete the picture presented by their better known male counterparts including Paul Nash, whose 'We are Making a New World' is one of the most iconic images of the war. For these women 'new worlds' were indeed opening up in more senses than one.
