Professor Will Vaughan and his wife Pek Peppin discovered this tiny Somerset farmhouse in the last stages of dereliction in 1982. The journey to making it habitable has been long and complicated and has turned up some interesting discoveries - the remains of a medieval hall and some very rare late 15th century wall paintings. Will and Pek have agreed to open their home for an illustrated talk and tour of the house exclusively for us on 10th June, followed by tea and cake. The house next door is going to be holding an open garden event at the same time. NB this is a medieval property and therefore has uneven flooring and narrow stairs which are not be suitable for people with mobility problems. Visitors are suggested to wear flat shoes with good grip and to watch their footing at all times.

Course aim

To look around a medieval farmhouse in Castle Cary, including some wall paintings from the 15th century and to have a talk on the 17th Century map of castle Cary lodged in the British Library by Prof Will Vaughan.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This is a medieval farmhouse, the floor is uneven and the stairs steep and narrow with low doorways. I would suggest that the venue is therefore not suitable for people with mobility problems

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise the architectural points of a medieval hall
  • Have a look through a squint
  • Be able to offer a brief summary of the reformation

How will I be taught?

  • This will be a visit with an accompanying talk

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities, such as checking understanding

What else do I need to know?

  • This is being held in a medieval farmhouse, the floor is uneven, so flat shoes with a good grip are recommended
