Online Creative Writing - Planning and researching your novel

Join the first in this series of online creative writing courses designed to help you write a novel in a year. This course, which takes place over six two hour video meetings, will help you research your novel and understand genre, plot, location, characterisation and point-of-view (narrative).

Course aim

This online creative writing course is designed to take you step by step towards writing a novel in twelve months.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify different genres and apply appropriate conventions.
  • Understand and develop plot.
  • Decide upon the time and location of the story (where and when does it take place)? and use essential sources to conduct research.
  • Develop interesting characters. (characterisation through developing back stories etc.)
  • Establish point of view (who is going to tell the story)?

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • In order to participate in this course you need to have access to the Internet and download video meeting software to set up a free Zoom account.
