Support Your Child with Reading and Writing

This course is for parents and carers of school children. You will be given the knowledge, skills and understanding to help support your child’s learning. The course has fun and practical activities designed to boost your confidence and literacy, numeracy and science skills. Come along and find out how you can help your child and have some fun at the same time!

Course aim

To help parents support their children effectively in core subjects found within the primary curriculum. Parents will be taught basic aspects of the curriculum and practise strategies that will underpin their child's learning experiences at school.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Learners will be able to identify how children can develop their learning through play.
  • Learners will be able to support and encourage children's social, emotional and behavioural development.
  • Learners will be able to identify practical strategies to support children's development in literacy.
  • Learners will be able to recognise practical strategies to support children's development in maths.
  • Learners will be able to identify practical strategies to support children’s development in science.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
