This course is designed to provide you with the skills to be able to grow your own food for free. You will learn how to prepare a nutritious growing medium (soil) for your early sown vegetables. You will learn how to keep them warm and nourished during the early stages of their life. Beginners Welcome.

Course aim

This course provides a practical introduction to early sowing and nurturing of young seedlings and preparation of good growing conditions.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe what soil is and why it is so important for the growing of food.
  • Use basic gardening tools in a healthy and safe way.
  • Sow different types of seeds.
  • Nourish and protect your seeds during the early stages of growth in cold weather.
  • Create the right growing environment for a variety of different types of vegetables and fruits.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Health and Safety at Work How to use specialised tools and how to clean and store them How to work as part of a team and how to work independently

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • You will be able to continue to work and learn after the course by looking after your plants at home and develop your skills by taking further courses that follow the growing season.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • You will need to wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
