This course will explore works by the American novelist Henry James and consider the texts in terms of their social, political and historical context.

Course aim

The aim of this course will be to explore works by the novelist Henry James. The course will include one of his longer novels and a couple of his short stories.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the writing of Henry James.
  • demonstrate an understanding of the social, political and historical context of his works.
  • understand aspects of narrative technique.
  • participate in group discussion.
  • critically evaluate primary source material.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Students will need to bring a copy of each text available to them on the appropriate week.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • The following texts need to be read for this course - The Portrait of a Lady, The Turn of the Screw. The Aspern Papers.
