Cornish Mining Explorers - The Great Flat Lode

The day will enable students to gain knowledge and understanding of mining heritage along the Great Flat Lode just south of Camborne. It will start and finish at the King Edward Mine Museum and will consist of a walk along the great flat lode trail of just over seven miles looking at mining remains and learning about their history. The walk will finish with an optional guided tour of the King Edward Mine Museum to see working machinery once used to train mining engineers in the practice of processing tin from ore.

Course aim

This course will provide an understanding of mining history and heritage on the Great Flat Lode mining area of West Cornwall.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss the history of mining on the Great Flat Lode.
  • Recognise the relevance and function of the mining remains on the trail.
  • Explain the importance of mining in Cornish history.
  • Gain an understanding of the processes used in mining and mneral processing.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • Be prepared for a seven mile walk with stout footwear, weather appropriate clothing, water and a packed lunch. Refreshments can be purchased at the 'Croust Hut' café at King Edward Mine if preferred.
