What are the Articles of Faith? How can we learn more about the key moral principles for Muslims? How might we understand Shari'a law and the Sunni and Shia split? What is the role of the Masjid for the Ummah? How might we understand the role of women in Islam? To explore these questions and many more, join us for a journey into the Islamic faith.

Course aim

This introductory course will enable you to have a deeper understanding of this growing world faith.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the history of Islam
  • Have a clear understanding of the role of The Prophet Muhammad and other recognised prophets
  • Understand the moral guidance in Islam and the sources of authority and law
  • Understand the five pillars of Islam and the Articles of faith
  • Understand who make up the Muslim Ummah and the gender roles and expectations within

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • Just bring pen and lined paper

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
