Learn the art of beautiful writing from basic Roman letterforms to decorated verse. Various alphabets are covered over the many courses such as Gothic, Italics and Uncials. Decorated work and gold leaf-work is also studied by more experienced students.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to the art of beautiful writing so that students can produce their own stationery, family trees or poetry.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand pen angles, lines and pen-widths.
  • Complete the chosen alphabet (1st course- Foundational Hand) lower case, capitals and numbers.
  • Produce a piece of work in the chosen style.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • An Edding 1255 3.5 pen or similar, ordinary A4 paper, pencil and ruler.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
