Victorian Panorama - Literature

This course will explore a selection of works by some of the most popular writers of the Victorian period. Novels from the mid to late-nineteenth century will be studied as will images of the period as seen through the satirical eye of Punch.

Course aim

The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to a range of literature from the Victorian period and there will be attention paid to the social concerns with which these novels engage.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of Victorian literature, society and culture.
  • Explore a range of work by important Victorian novelists.
  • Be conversant with formal aspects of fiction such as narrative structure, point of view, omniscient and unreliable narrators.
  • Participate in class discussion.
  • Be confident of reading literature within its cultural and social contexts.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Students will need to have a copy of each text available to them on the appropriate week. The text can be in the form of a hard copy or on an electronic device.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • The following texts should be read in advance of the course: Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and The Way we Live Now by Anthony Trollope
