The Creation and Management of the Wessex Landscape

Ref: C3529110

‘Wessex’ is famed for its woods, forests, reclaimed marshlands, watermeadows, rivers, heathlands, grasslands and coast. The Creation and Management of the Wessex Landscape is concerned with the interface between natural resources (geology, soils, climate, water and ecology) on the one hand, and human activity on the other. The modern landscape we often strive to conserve is the interplay of humans with the natural world. Following an account of the natural resources of the region, the key habitats will be described in turn including the people who worked the landscape and we find that certain occupations (such as woodsmen, drowners and drovers) are rare today. The outcome will be an appreciation of the livelihoods and natural factors that have shaped the landscape that we all enjoy.
