During this course we will explore Poets & Artists of the First World War with particular reference to Edward Thomas, Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon & Isaac Rosenberg and the Artists: Percy Wyndham Lewis, C R Nevinson, Stanley Spencer, Sir William Orpen, John & Paul Nash amongst others.

Course aim

To establish a deeper understanding and critical appreciation of the lives and work of early Twentieth Century Poets & Artists.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss the lives and work of Poets & Artists during this period in history.
  • Enjoy a visual depiction of great British Art in this period and study development.
  • Read and discuss poetry in small groups and enjoy discussion within the whole group.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

  • Nothing else is needed
