This course will look at extracts from the writing of Sarah Grand and consider her work in its social, political and historical context.

Course aim

The aim of this course is to explore the writing of the late nineteenth century 'New Woman' writer Sarah Grand.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the writing of Sarah Grand.
  • demonstrate and understanding of the social, political and historical context of her works.
  • understand aspects of narrative technique.
  • participate in group discussion.
  • critically evaluate primary source material.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Pens, pencils and notebook for note taking.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre-reading is required and extracts of the work will be provided on the day. If attendees have read Grand's novels, The Heavenly Twins and/or The Beth Book that would be useful but is absolutely NOT essential.
