Day School - A History of Venice in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Century

Venice was in its heyday in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, but rather than focus solely on its art and architecture, this day school will provide the backdrop for those artistic achievements by considering the culture, economy, politics and religion of the Venetian Republic.

Course aim

To provide an overview of the Venetian Republic; the city and its maritime empire in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • Anyone with an interest in history. Students will need to read and analyse historical sources and analyse visual images. The course will use an appropriate vocabulary for the critical discussion of sources and texts.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Acquire a broad knowledge of key events in the history of the Venetian Republic during the period.
  • Acquire an appreciation of the distinctiveness of Venice’s political, economic and cultural position within the Italian City States of the Renaissance period.
  • Appreciate the context in which Venetian art and architecture flourished.
  • Develop skills in working with historical writing from the period.
  • Develop skills in analysing visual sources for the period.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

  • There will be opportunity to make contributions to discussions, to practice using your analytical skills and to reflect on your learning throughout.
