A creative writing course suitable for people with an interest in this area and/or wishing to express themselves. The course aims to teach basic/intermediate skills with further exercises to inspire and stimulate you to write effective stories and poems using your experiences and imagination.

Course aim

Using exercises to encourage and inspire students to write poetry, prose and autobiography.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Write autobiographical sketches
  • Write poems in a variety of new styles and formats
  • Write fiction using differing points of view and tenses.
  • Share my work more confidently with others in the group
  • Give more effective feedback on my own and other's writing

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Every week there will be an insoirationl exercise which the student will complete at home to be shared at the next session.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • Every week you will comment on what you feel you have achieved/learnt and receive enouraging feedback from the tutor.

What else do I need to know?

  • Something to write with and something to write on. A notebook is recommended.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
