Do you often say "yes" when you really want to say "no"? Do you find it difficult to communicate your needs? Have you sometimes felt that you have not been listened to? This course will outline assertive thinking skills and explore different communication strategies that can be used to improve social interactions, build confidence and help you find the right words.

Course aim

This course will outline assertive thinking skills and explore different communication strategies that can be used to improve social interactions, build confidence and help you find the right words.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Write a definition of assertiveness
  • Identify the different behavioural styles and explain their impact on others
  • Understand the importance of "rights" in assertiveness
  • List the barriers to assertiveness and the benefits of assertive communication

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
