Get ready for Maths Entry 2

We will use common situations like shopping, travel, house and home, and health to build on your skills in counting and adding. We will also explore subtracting and some simple division and multiplication and will discuss common shapes and size.

Course aim

This course will help you to build your confidence in Maths. You will develop your Maths skills through everyday situations and work on areas that will help you to progress onto a City & Guilds Entry 2 Functional Skills Maths qualification.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • You will need to talk to a member of staff and do a short activity to make sure the course is right for you. For more information and to book an appointment please call 0300 303 3464
  • You must be a fluent speaker of English.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Increase my confidence in using basic Maths in everyday life
  • Extend my counting and start to read and write numbers beyond 10
  • Practise how to subtract and start to use some basic rules to multiply and divide smaller numbers
  • Discuss how time and dates appear and are read
  • Start to measure some everyday items using a ruler, a set of scales or a measuring jug, identify where numbers appear in everyday lists

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Official document(s) showing the correct spelling of your name, address and date of birth. Certificates for any Maths qualifications you already have. A folder, some paper and a pen/pencil to every lesson.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • It is useful to think about where you use Maths in everyday life and where you find this difficult. The tutor will use this information to support you as you develop your Maths skills.
