Pattern Making and Sewing for Intermediates

On this course you will learn to independently create your own dressmaking or craft items from pattern to sewing completion. The tutor will aim to create a supportive community environment where everyone is equal and can learn at their own pace.

No class on 13/2/18. All students would need to provide their own materials or they could purchase from the tutor on an 'as needed' basis for a minimal charge.

Course aim

The main aim for this course is to give the students the ability to independently be making patterns and complete a wide range of different sewing projects.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create a pattern by coping a craft item or an item of clothes
  • Sew a craft item or item of clothes from start to finish
  • Create a dress making pattern block
  • Create patterns by draping on the dress making dummy
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the process from pattern to finished product

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • You need to bring a sewing/pattern cutting kit with: scissors, needle, thread, tape measure, pins, ruler/pattern master, notebook and pencil. Fabric can either be brought along or purchased from the tutor on an as needed basis.
