Paris & Montmartre, 1900 – 1914, explore the exciting early years of Matisse and Picasso’s artistic development to include the vivid and innovative Fauvist movement with artists such as Derain, Vlaminck and Van Dongen and the revolutionary Cubist Movement with Georges Braque.

Course aim

To explore the exciting early years of Picasso, Matisse & the Fauves from 1900 to 1914 in Paris & Montmartre, illustrating the vivid and innovative Fauvist movement and the revolutionary Cubist movement.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • • Recognise the work of the Fauves and the Cubists.
  • • Assess the connections between the artists of this period.
  • • Discuss the ideas of the new Modernist art.
  • • Examine and appraise the work of these artists.
  • • Discuss and analyse within a small group and within the group as a whole, different themes and ideas.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
