Art - Improvers Mixed Media

An improvers’ art course for learners who would like to develop their skills and creativity in order to achieve self development, and build a portfolio of work to exhibit. This course will cover advanced drawing and painting in: pencil, charcoal, pastels, watercolour, acrylic and collage. Learners will be encouraged to develop their own style and may work towards abstraction. Learn the ‘tricks of the trade’ while developing your own style.

Course aim

This course will enable learners to develop their drawing, painting and mixed media skills and build creative thinking. At the end of the course learners will have a portfolio of visual experiments which will aspire to a professional standard.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Improve my drawing skills with observational and imaginative tasks
  • Improve my painting skills including brushwork and colour mixing
  • Improve my use of mixed media: pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolour, acrylic and collage.
  • Improve my creative thinking and personal idea development.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please bring A3 cartridge paper, pencil and eraser to the first lesson. Eventually pastel paper, watercolour paper, canvas/ canvas board or acrylic paper, pastels, watercolours, acrylics, brushes and palette will be required.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
