Peer Mentoring and Support Skills

Are you the person people come to for a chat? Do people describe you as a good listener? Are you looking to develop your skills in supporting others? This taster session provides an introduction to support skills within a safe, welcoming environment. Have a go at practicing your listening skills and sign up to the follow on 2 day course in November 2017.

Course aim

This course will provide students with a brief understanding of what peer mentoring and support work is, and provide an opportunity for learners to start thinking about skills in listening and empathising with others.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss understanding of mentoring and support work with peers.
  • Explore different communication styles.
  • Practice effective communication skills.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
