ESOL entry 1 speaking and listening

This is an Entry 1 Listening and Speaking course. Learners will learn basic English around the theme of health, such as going to see the doctor and healthy eating and exercise.

Course aim

This is a beginner English course. Learners will learn English for everyday survival.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • You will need to talk to a member of staff and do a short activity to make sure the course is right for you. For more information and to book an appointment please call 0300 303 3464
  • This course is for people with little spoken English

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Talk about a range of sport and exercise learners like to do in simple sentences.
  • Talk about food learners like and dislike and say whether they are healthy or not.
  • Respond to a range a of questions about personal needs and interests
  • Learn vocabulary to describe a range of ailments for use with GP.
  • Ask another learner questions about health and interests

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will receive regular homework to use your English out of class.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a pen and A4 paper. A dictionary would be useful or access to the internet by phone to translate new language.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Learners will progress to Entry 1 Reading and Writing courses.
